Why supplier vetting is the most important skill in reselling
When you resell consumer electronics, your margin and your reputation both depend on the supplier behind the box. A good wholesale partner is consistent, transparent, and easy to reach when something goes wrong. A bad one quietly erodes your business with late shipments, surprise costs, and inconsistent quality. Before you place a meaningful order, run through this checklist.
1. Confirm the business is real
Ask for the legal company name, registration or tax ID, and a physical address — then verify them independently. A legitimate distributor will have a consistent footprint: a real website, business email on its own domain, and references you can actually call. Be cautious with suppliers who only communicate through messaging apps and refuse to put basics in writing.
2. Understand pricing, MOQs, and payment terms
Get the price list in writing, along with the minimum order quantity (MOQ) per product and any volume breaks. Clarify the payment terms up front: what deposit is required, what methods are accepted, and what (if anything) is refundable. Reputable suppliers are comfortable explaining exactly what you pay and when.
3. Pin down shipping and Incoterms
Shipping terms decide who pays for freight and who carries the risk at each stage. Make sure you both agree on the Incoterm before you order — EXW, FOB, and DAP all split responsibility very differently. If you are new to this, our guide to EXW shipping walks through one of the most common arrangements.
4. Check warranty, returns, and authenticity
Ask how defective units are handled, what the return window is, and who covers return freight. For branded goods, confirm the products are genuine and ask about the supply source. A clear, written returns policy protects you when a batch has issues — and tells you a lot about how the supplier runs.
5. Start small, then scale
The cheapest insurance in wholesale is a small first order. A sample or trial quantity lets you inspect quality, test the logistics, and confirm the supplier delivers what they promised — before you commit real capital. Once a partner proves reliable across a few cycles, scaling up is far less risky.
The bottom line
Treat supplier selection like hiring: verify, document, and test before you commit. The few hours you spend vetting up front save you from the much larger cost of an order that goes sideways.
